The Boeing 737 Max was the fastest-selling airliner in Boeing history selling more than 5000 aircraft over the past few years. But in April and May Boeing sold zero.
Max was a big fuel-efficient and more affordable than other planes.
It was popular plane until a particular sensor became a problem which eventually led to two fatal crashes in five months Lion Air flight 610 and Ethiopian Airlines flight 302 killing everyone on both fligths:346 souls on board. Since then there has been a worldwide grounding of the 737MAX lawsuits from pilots and families affected by the crashes and congressional hearings and the US Department of Justice has begun a criminal investigation.
Boeing took a long time to address the issue which only seems to have made things worse.
With modifications to the plane's software underway and hopes that it will fly again soon the questions remains: Can Boeing bounce back?
This wasn't a problem that Boeing had a problem with their designs.
In the 1960s the Boeing 727 had issues with its new wings.
Moreover, 30 years later in the 1990s, the Boeing 737 had issues with its rudder.
In 2013 the Boeing 787 Dreamliner had issues with its battery catching on fire.
''Long before MAX disasters Boeing had a history of failing to fix safety problems'' says Washington Post regarding the MAX fatal crisis.
INCIDENTS OVER THE YEARS:
Boeing has a history of introducing new designs that lack advice from outside experts to ensure safety and this sensor with the 737 MAX was no different.
Explaining Boeing's lack of safety Aviation safety Specialist Christine Negroni says in an interview that: '' How the Boeing 737MAX crashed not one but two occasions is it the result of complicated decisions that were made early on in the process when they were trying to decide what they were going to do with their next narrow-body aircraft in a competitive market with airbus.
And they decided rather than build a new plane they would go back and tinker with an old plane.''
PRIORITIZING PROFIT OVER PEOPLE
Therefore Boeing went back on the 1960s and took the old 737 models adding larger engineers to create the 737MAX.T This new design causes the nose of the plane to point up. Boeing added the Manoeuvring Characteristics Augmentation System also known as MCAS to essentially keep the nose from pointing up. However quoting Mrs Negroni that the next problem was that they didn't tell the pilots or even the airlines that this solution existed on the aircraft and continues '' What would happen when the MCAS triggered is that the aeroplane would not give control back to the pilots it would continue to put the aeroplane in a nose-down position and she adds: '' Even when the pilots recognized that maybe there was a problem with this system and tried to turn it off the forces on the tail they were so great that they were unable to physically override the nose-down''.
Furthermore, pilots also lacked proper training with the MCAS. According to Seattle Times and New York Times: ''They have trained on an iPad instead of a simulator and no more than one-hour session and that the airlines do not have simulators specific to the MAX models. In order to cut costs and shorten the training time.
The two planes that crashed didn't have the angle of attack safety feature that could have altered pilots if the aircraft was pointing in a wrong direction because Boeing charged extra for.
''So this increased public mistrusts of Boeing is probably a result of two fatal crashes but also how Boeing responded to them'' says the news reporter Sinead Baker and she adds: '' The public is definitely sceptical of Boeing after these two crashes.''
A recent poll found that 41% of Americans wouldn't fly on the 737 MAX until it was back in service for 6 months and there were no incidents. It took Boeing almost a month to issue an apology and in the meantime, the US government was so slow to ground the planes compared to other countries.
It made people feel that the US and its safety regulators can't be fully trusted.
Expert say that this was a mistake that it makes Boeing insincere and that it prioritized profit over people
Boeing slow report has cost them as wasn't able to sell any 737MAXes for three months after they were grounded in March.
At the moment Boeing is doing a lot of things to win people's trust back. They have been apologising to people more frequently, they have been offering to fly their CEO first on the plane in a bid to prove that MAX is safe. They have also organized more sales of the plane to prove how confident the industry is still on the jet planes.
During the 2019 at the Paris Air Show Boeing announce its first buyer since the 737MAX was grounding. The International Airline Groups the parent companies of British Airways placed an order for 200 737 MAXes while the deal will carry a list price of $24 billion, it was likely discounted because of Boeing's current woes though the planes won't start to be delivered until 2023. This sale gives the planemaker a much- needed vote of confidence.
Despite the fact that Boeing has gained support from certain airlines it still needs to show pilots flight attendants regulators and the general public that it cares thought actions and words that the plane is safe to fly and that the company can be trusted.
''Boeing knows that cannot survive another event with this MCAS so nobody wants to fix the work more than Boeing. We can rest assured that its desire is there. Is it capable of understanding all the potential faults, all of the potential remedies and instituting them is the next questions'' says Negroni and adds'' I think Boeing needs to be open to Media, I think Boeing needs to stop shutting out reporters and stop closing down and obstructing when legitimate questions are raised''
The crisis has already been pretty expensive for the company and it is likely to cost them even more. In the first quarter of the year, they have lost 1billions of dollars and airlines around the world now want compensation from Boeing even those who said that completely trust Boeing such Ryanair, Norwegian and Southwest. It is also facing a lawsuit from families from around the world some of the hundreds of millions of dollars.
There is no telling when 737MAX will be cleared to fly again. Recent reports indicate that the software may not even work and that the plane might require a hardware fix which it would even more expensive and take even more time.
