NORWEGIAN: CHARGING FOR HAND LUGGAGE

From EN
Norwegian Air has suffered severe revenue losses in the past years as the delivery of the Max 737  has failed and now are in an effort to gain back the profit. During 2019 the low-cost carrier has decided to shut down the Dublin base which was meant to operate transatlantic flights to the US operating on MAX 737.
Norwegian airline has now started charging for cabin bags on flights and said that this new cabin policy will offer to their customers great ''freedom of choice'' and will apply to all bookings made after the 23 January 2020.

Following in Ryanair's footsteps, the airline will now only include one small bag that can fit underneath the seat in front in its free luggage allowance.
Travellers who want to bring a full-sized cabin bag have to pay an extra charge between £5 and £9 each way or upgrade to a more expensive airfare type.

For instance, Low Fare+ passengers can bring an additional overhead bag plus one checked bag, whereas Flex, Premium or PremiumFlex include an overhead bag and two pieces of luggage in the hold.

''It's disappointing but unsurprising to see Norwegian jump on the bandwagon and introduce cabin baggage charges,'' said Adam Ewart, CEO and founder of sendMyBag, an international luggage delivery company.

''One of the last bastions of fair air travel has buckled and prioritised profit over the customer experience and adding ''until now, Norwegian has been one of the most popular low-cost long-haul airlines for passengers. As hand luggage was previously offered as standard across all ticket types, it'll be interesting to see how its customers will react to paying for the privilege of bringing their personal items on board.

Cecilie Nybi Carlsen VP of product management at Norwegian emphasised that the move is aimed at making the boarding process smoother and more punctual.

''It's important for us that everyone has a good travel experience when they fly Norwegian,'' she said and adding ''Now with the new policy in place our goals is that boarding will be smoother for our passengers, we can avoid spending time rearranging carry-on baggage in the overhead lockers and help ensure that our aircraft depart on time.''
